BORN PERFORMER: Wedding magician Tony yearned to be a performer from the tender age of five when his Dad showed him a trick.

Tony Steward was just five years old when he developed an interest in magic after his Dad showed him a simple trick. At that time, his big treat was being allowed to stay up late to watch TV magicians of the day – Tommy Cooper, David Nixon and Paul Daniels – and when he got the chance, he would be found in his local library searching for books on his favourite subject … Magic!

He discovered he had a natural talent and soon mastered a few tricks which he performed to the amazement of his school pals, friends and family. He says: ‘The buzz I got from entertaining people was addictive – I just wanted to perform.’

He got the chance to entertain more critical audiences later in life when he joined the Ilford Magical Society and was soon taking part in outside shows to raise funds for local charities. Through this, he started to get enquiries to entertain at private parties and before long, he was approached by an entertainment agency and signed up to perform at major corporate events in and around London.

As his popularity increased, he decided to go-it-alone and concentrate more on weddings and family parties, mainly in Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and London, within reasonable travelling distance of his home. However, he still enjoys his work as a corporate magician and occasionally, for the sheer fun of it, he indulges his passion by performing street magic wherever he happens to be – from Chelsea to Chatham or Chelmsford!

The Complete Wedding Magician inspires new generation of magicians

He is a past chairman of the Ilford Magical Society which enabled him to maintain links with fellow professionals and to pass on his knowledge and expertise to aspiring magicians from across the region. And he has played a key role in the society’s charity work, taking part in outside shows to raise thousands of pounds a year for worthy causes.

WINNING WAYS: Tony is pictured with some of the awards he has received for prize-winning magic.

Judged by fellow magicians – the most critical judges of all – he has won awards for best interpretation of a classic trick, top card trick, most baffling trick, and most impressive close-up magic presented to an audience. However, the proudest moment of his 25-year professional career came when the Board of Examiners at the world-renowned Magic Circle judged his performance and awarded an AIMC (Associate of the Inner Magic Circle) Degree with Silver Star – the organisation’s highest possible performance examination award.

He is also proud of his many client testimonials which he is delighted to share with anyone considering hiring him as a wedding magician, or for any other celebration or event. The testimonials highlight not only his magic skills but also his high standard of performance and his close attention to detail in ensuring he delivers exactly what his clients require.

Secret of a successful wedding magician …

Tony believes that the secret of being a successful wedding magician is 90 percent performance and 10 percent magic. ‘Anyone can perform a magic trick – even a five‑year‑old!’ he says. ‘I proved that. The real skill is in the professional performance which is something that only comes with experience.’

As a professional wedding magician, Tony is a member of the performers’ union Equity which provides public liability insurance cover up to £10 million. He is also bound by the Equity Code of Conduct and holds a CRB Certificate.
